drawing, dancing, and all the fun stuff in between!

Month: October, 2013

I’ve been pole dancing for almost 6 years before I ever did my first solo.  Yup. Performing was never really my thing. I only performed because it was new and it forced me to try new doubles with my pole partner Mirell.

So for years I pole danced for gigs, parties, whatever, but only as part of a duo called Girl VS Girl.

But for Polecats Manila’s 3rd year anniversary show last November 2012, we were tasked to come up with solos that would show our individual style as dancers. I hadn’t really thought of myself as a dancer until that point… but for the sake of pushing myself, of course I said YES.

Thank god I had just watched my friend, cellist Anjo Inacay perform for Ballet Philippines’ Crisostomo Ibarra a few weeks earlier. We had always talked about doing a collab together, so I thought this would be the perfect time.

And what song would be perfect for a cello solo? George Canseco’s Hiram , as performed in the Bolipata brothers’ album Pelikula at Pundaquit.

I decided that Anjo would be part of the dance (he would be the lover referred to in the song), and that we would both be blindfolded. I’ve forever loved Magritte’s The Lovers , and I took that as inspiration for the blindfolds, and I made Anjo wear a suit. I had a red lace costume made but it didn’t work out; my pole student (and future intern!) Tippi Sy would come to the rescue with a nude lace piece.

Magritte’s The Lovers

I asked the dancer with the most beautiful feet Dani Rodriguez for choreo help. It was so difficult for me to bare my soul on stage instead of doing just acrobatics.

AARGHHHHH. That is me wrestling with my feelings.

I had to dig deep for this one. I’m not an actress, I’m quite heartless most days, and I hate showing that I’m vulnerable, so this piece was very difficult. So I’m really lucky that Anjo is the best to work with! He makes it so easy. And such beautiful painful cello playing. I’m forever grateful that he agreed to do this (and he bought a new tie for this show as well!)

So we did it:

I’d like to perform this piece again, if only because I think I understand dancing much more now, a year later.  I’ve retired from performing gigs, but I think if I had the chance to make something this personal again, I’d willingly do it, feelings and all.

VS 360

This year, I am back as Artistic Director of our company Polecats Manila. Part of my job is to make sure we have fresh projects and collaborations. So this year I revived our VS series, where we do themed photo projects.

Past photo projects have included one with Parkour Philippines:

We also did a shoot with light painting:

(look at that light-painted polecats logo! my labor of love. it was really difficult cutting through illustration board!)

For this series, we worked with our good friends and partners-in-fitness, the coaches of 360 Fitness Club. Headed by Coach Chappy Callanta, they offer a complete workout for anyone in just 30 minutes! We decided to look clean and display their strength and our grace.

My good friend and co-Silverlens artist Corinne de San Jose took the photos.

Here’s my photo with 360 coach Nicole Mapilisan:

I’ve done other stuff with Mapi before:

(He had really sore obliques for three days after this photo. Haha!)

Anyway, the complete VS 360 set is here.

And here we are, looking so not like our usual sweaty selves:

Yey! Polecats ❤ 360  🙂

Hello Paris!

Yes!  I’m  going to Paris!

Corinne and I were first informed by our Silverlens gallerists Isa and Rachel in April this year that we *might* get into Paris Photo. And that if we did, could we make a set of collaborations, like the one we did two years ago? Of course, YES.

For the last collab called A Very Short Flowering Season Corinne took photos of women’s backs (hers and mine included! I wonder who bought my back?); I embroidered flora on sheer fabric which we then layered over the photos. The piece was then mounted on a lightbox, so that the embroidery looked more like illustrations made with a pen.

For this new collab called New Pairs we tried everything and everything and everything else. I had been folding paper for a while so I wanted to incorporate that, and she had been playing around with plaster, and she wanted to incorporate that.

After months of work and rolls of paper and tests prints and coffee and cake (lots of coffee and cake!)–  we have it! Our works are now framed, packed, and being shipped to Paris.

Hello Paris Photo !

Our visas have also been approved, and I’m now gathering cold wear. My body and my closet are so NOT built for the cold. So lucky that everyone in Polecats wear roughly the same size, give or take a couple of inches. I really do not want to shop for things I will not be using a lot. (Although, who knows? Who knows where I will go next?)

I’m also now trying to put together a list of places I want to see, although whenever I travel I’m really just happy to sit in a cafe or park somewhere and just watch people.

As I type this I am getting so excited! I’ve never been to Paris before. I love going to new places because the experience always inspires in me a sense of awe and wonder. I always come home energized, and excited to make new work.

GAAAAHHHHHH. That is me being all happy and things. Hello Paris, I will see you soon!
